The dark financing of the communist pamphlet La Diaria
The Uruguayan far-left propaganda outlet has shady funding and a history of lies
The far-left pamphlet was founded in 2006.
The purpose was to support the first government of the Frente Amplio at the time, led by Tabaré Vázquez.
A group of communists, socialists, unionists, radical feminists, and left-wing political operators wanted to defend the first Frente Amplio administration, and launched this so-called "media outlet."
In addition to permanently defending Frente Amplio, the rag promotes all its satellites, such as PIT-CNT, FEUU (a university student organization dominated by the far-left Chavista movement), FUCVAM (housing cooperativists whose leader was Gustavo González, current senator of the Socialist Party), and of course, encourages radical anti-family and anti-male feminism.
Natalia Uval, the director
Uval is its director and public face. She is an ultra-radical feminist, who has also been dependent on the Montevideo city government.
In 2021, with Cosse as mayor, Uval began her participation in the propaganda program La letra chica, broadcast by TvCiudad, the city government's channel.

From the aforementioned program, she dedicated herself to praising not only Frente Amplio, but also its various satellites such as the families of "disappeared persons" and PIT-CNT. It is more than obvious that if La Diaria's director is economically dependent on Cosse, she was never going to criticize her.
Of course, she was not going to criticize the poor administrations of Montevideo's departmental governments either.
Media aggression against a child
Another person who wrote for the pamphlet was DenisseLegrand, who also participated in the aforementioned TV Ciudad program, receiving, of course, public money.
Legrand attacked a minor with different abilities in the media in 2021, for which she was reported to a court.
She never retracted her media aggression, and La Diaria never provided explanations as to why they had a minor aggressor as a columnist.
International funding
The rag is not only funded with money from Uruguayan taxpayers, it also receives millions from abroad, mainly through foundations that supposedly support freedom of expression and Human Rights.
One is the Avina Foundation, which together with Omidyar Network and Avina Americas, created the Latin American Alliance for Civic Technology (ALTEC) in 2017, with a fund of 3.5 million dollars to "support civic technology projects in Latin America."

La Diaria benefited from this fund to develop "Río Abierto," a project that, according to them, "democratizes information about water quality in Uruguay, in collaboration with universities and social actors."
This foundation promotes the 2030 Agenda, radical anti-family feminism, environmental fanaticism, and of course, supports the narco dictatorships of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.
It is clear that if La Diaria is funded by this international foundation, it will follow the guidelines set for it. They are not independent at all.
The rag often claims that a large part of its funding comes from its readers' subscriptions. This is completely false.
No one knows exactly how many subscribers they have, but there is no doubt that there are not many, and those subscribers are by no means enough to fund them.
The real funding comes from state agencies and international foundations that inject money into it.
La Diaria doesn't verify
Since they believe they own the truth, a couple of years ago they launched a section called "La Diaria verifica," where they label news and posts circulating on social media as "false" or "misleading" news, even if that news is real.
They intend to disqualify real news or social media posts that they do not like.
They label it as "fake news," with a distorted explanation of the facts.
Some of their lies
On November 8, 2024, before the second round of elections, they said it was "false" that Frente Amplio leader Pablo Ferreri had said that the Interior should finance works in Montevideo. However, Ferreri did say that.
On March 31 of this year, they stated that it was "misleading" that Orsi's government had raised rents. The truth is that property rents had indeed increased.
On April 11, they indicated that it was "misleading" that the Socialist Party lawyer JuanCeretta had been reported for assaulting a minor.
The reality is that Ceretta was reported by the victim's family in January, and in the first days of February he appeared in court and was given precautionarymeasures for his media aggression against a girl with different abilities.
A few days ago, on June 30, they claimed it was "misleading" that 53% of Uruguayans do not approve of Orsi's administration.
Such a percentage is not misleading, it is totally true. However, their fanaticism led the rag to cast doubt on what was reflected by a serious poll.
2024 electoral campaign
During the 2024 electoral campaign, every few days they labeled as "false" news that was completely real. The idea was to "build a truth" and delegitimize news that was not convenient for presidential candidate Yamandú Orsi, whom they supported.

Until the internal election on June 30, 2024, they supported Carolina Cosse, who was one of the pre-candidates. When she lost, from July until the runoff, they promoted the Orsi - Cosse presidential ticket.
La Diaria has every right to support communism, radical feminism, and Caribbean narco dictatorships. What they do not have the right to do is to disguise themselves as an "independent media outlet" and to collect money from all Uruguayans.
It would be much more sincere for them to define themselves as the propaganda outlet of the radical left, funded with public money, and not deceive their readers by pretending to be something they are not.
