Worrying: Andrade and Moreira are lobbying for a new tax increase
Frente Amplio senators Óscar Andrade and Constanza Moreira are pushing for a tax increase
In Uruguay, the debate over a supposed "tax on the rich" has recently gained relevance, especially after the proposal by the PIT-CNT (Frente Amplio-aligned union confederation) to levy a 1% tax "on the richest 1% of the population," allegedly to "combat child poverty."
This initiative was presented by the union bureaucracy during the Workers' Day event on May 1, 2025, and has caused support in sectors of the Frente Amplio.
Yamandú Orsi and the Minister of Economy, Gabriel Oddone, have reiterated that they don't plan to implement new taxes.

Statists want to collect more
However, the ultra-radical left sectors, which are the ones dominating Orsi's government, insist on increasing the tax burden on Uruguayans, which is already extremely high.
The real objective isn't to tax the richest, but rather to increase taxes on the middle class and productive sectors.
Whenever taxes are about to be imposed, the excuse is always the same: that "those who have the most" should pay, and what is collected from the new tax will be for "the poor," "the underpaid workers," "vulnerable children," and other excuses that Uruguay has already heard millions of times.
The proposed tax hike
What Oscar Andrade, Constanza Moreira, and also Senator Gustavo González of the Socialist Party are truly proposing is to punish the productive sector, small and medium-sized industry.

They intend for it to pay more than small businesses, for the salaried worker with a decent wage to pay more, and with this, to continue placing the gigantic cost of the State on the shoulders of Uruguayans.
It's a lie that they want to tax the richest. They want to have money in their hands to spend and squander as they please, to make dirty deals, and to expand the State apparatus and continue placing relatives, friends, lovers, and political allies in public positions.
Since it looks very bad to say that they simply want to increase taxes, the proposal is disguised by saying that "those who will pay more are the rich," which is completely false.
The proposal consists of a tax increase on the labor sectors, salaried workers, and employers, so that the ultra-radical left politicians have more money in their hands.

Failed recipe
It's the same failed recipe as always. The old statist and impoverishing socialism that punishes those who work and want to get ahead in order to increase the state bureaucracy, and for politicians to control people's money.
Andrade, Moreira, and González are faithful representatives of the mega impoverishing statism.
What occurs to them is to increase society's tax burden, to collect with aggressive fiscal voracity, but they never propose improving the management of public spending and optimizing resources.
The only proposal they have is to increase the tax burden, so that the State collects more and squanders more.
Nothing new under the sun. More taxes on workers and small business owners and industrialists, and more statist politicians squandering taxpayers' money.
