Argentina reached an all-time record for oil production as the global price rises due to the conflict in Iran

In the midst of growing international tension over the conflict between Iran and Israel, which once again shook the global energy market, Argentina achieved an unprecedented milestone: it achieved the highest oil production since official records exist.

According to data from the Ministry of Energy, 4,262,675 cubic meters of crude oil were produced in January, surpassing the previous record of December 2025 (4,245,403 m3). The jump consolidates a strong growth trend that has deepened in recent years

.

The year-on-year comparison shows an increase of 15.7% compared to January 2025. The contrast is even stronger if we analyze the period 2010-2022, when the country did not even reach three million m3 in the first month of the year. From 1999 to 2025, the barrier of four million m3 per month was exceeded only five times. Today, that brand is breaking again, this time with a sustained dynamic

.

Vaca Muerta, the engine of the record

The Ministry of Economy highlighted that daily production reached 882,200 barrels, 16.5% more than a year ago, mainly driven by Vaca Muerta, whose

production grew 35.5% year-on-year.

The province of Neuquén accounted for almost 70% of the national total, with 2,971,259 m3 produced in January, implying a growth of 32.37% and a new historical monthly record for that jurisdiction.

The contrast with other provinces is stark. Chubut, Santa Cruz and Mendoza showed year-on-year declines and production levels that are among the lowest in decades. The structural transformation of the Argentine energy map is evident: the dynamism of the unconventional has displaced traditional basins

. Rising

barrel and strategic opportunity

The intensification of the conflict in the Middle East and the threat of interruptions in the Strait of Hormuz — where about 20% of the world's supply circulates — pushed the price of Brent above 80 dollars

.

In this context, Argentina positions itself with an unprecedented window of opportunity. The combination of higher production and higher international prices can translate into higher exports, foreign exchange inflows and accelerated investment

.

Industry specialists point out that, until a few days ago, local crude oil was trading close to USD 70 per barrel. A higher international price could improve the profitability of production companies and accelerate new developments in Vaca

Muerta.

The internal challenge

The scenario, however, also presents challenges. Oil represents around 40% of the final price of fuels. If the barrel continues to rise, there could be adjustments at the pump, with an impact on logistics costs

and inflation.

Even so, the production record consolidates Argentina as an increasingly important player on the international energy scene. In a world marked by geopolitical instability, the country is beginning to emerge not only as an emerging hydrocarbon power, but as a reliable supplier in

a market that requires security of supply.
