President Javier Milei appointed Juan Bautista Mahiques as the new Minister of Justice of the Nation, replacing Mariano Cúneo Libarona, who left office after meeting the deadline agreed with the president.
The departure of Cúneo Libarona had been scheduled since October last year. The now former official held a meeting with the President at Quinta de Olivos to formalize
his removal.
In the same movement, the national representative of La Libertad Avanza, Santiago Viola, will take over as Secretary of Justice to replace Sebastián Amerio.
The Mahiques message: legal certainty and clear rules
After confirming his appointment, Mahiques publicly thanked Milei for the trust and stressed that “without justice there is no possible future”. He noted that the direction of the Government requires institutions that operate under the rule of law, with clear and stable rules that rebuild public trust and provide
legal security.
“Argentina needs justice independent of political disputes, impartial in its decisions, agile in its time and modern in its tools,” said the new minister. In his message, he also thanked Karina Milei for her support and her role in the political leadership of the government team, a gesture that reflects the centrality of the general secretary

Mahiques has been serving since 2019 as head of the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, that is, head of Buenos Aires prosecutors. In addition, he has been president of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) since 2022 and was the representative of the Executive Branch in the Judicial Council during the presidency of
Mauricio Macri.
His career places him as a leader with technical experience and in-depth knowledge of the functioning of the judicial system, at a time when the Government seeks to consolidate reforms aimed at strengthening the independence of powers and ensuring institutional predictability.
With this movement, the Milei administration reinforces the area of Justice at a key stage of its management, with the objective of advancing structural transformations and consolidating a legal framework that accompanies the process of economic stabilization and investment attraction.
