The government of José Antonio Kast took a significant step in terms of industrial development and defense by presenting the first aircraft manufactured in Chile in decades, a project that seeks to recover strategic capabilities and reduce technological dependence from abroad.
The new aircraft, called T-40 Newen, was developed by the National Aeronautical Company (ENAER) and represents a concrete step forward in the reactivation of the local aeronautical industry. The prototype is already 97% complete, with delivery scheduled for this year and test flights planned for 2027, in addition to an estimated initial production of 33 units
.
The project not only aims to modernize the training of Chilean Air Force pilots, replacing old models with more than 40 years of service, but it is also part of a broader government strategy to strengthen national autonomy in key areas.

Since the ruling party, the initiative was presented as an “investment and not an expense”, highlighting its impact on qualified employment, technological innovation and international projection. In that sense, the development of the T-40 Newen symbolizes a change in approach: moving from dependence on foreign technology to the generation of its own value-added capabilities
.
In addition, the program has significant economic potential, since it could position Chile as a regional supplier of training aircraft, in a market where several countries are seeking to modernize their fleets. This projection opens the door to exports and international cooperation in defense.
The political decision behind the project reflects a long-term vision, where the national industry and the Armed Forces play a key role in the country's development. In an increasingly competitive global context, the commitment to proprietary technology appears to be a central factor in ensuring sovereignty and growth.

Far from being an isolated event, the presentation of the T-40 Newen is part of a broader agenda of the Kast government aimed at strengthening security, production and innovation. With this progress, Chile not only regains its historic capacity, but it is also projecting itself into the future with a stronger and more strategic industrial base
