The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, was hospitalized this Friday in Brasilia to undergo surgery on his right shoulder, in an intervention authorized by the dictator of the Supreme Federal Court, Alexandre de Moraes.
Bolsonaro was transferred early in the morning from the home where he is under house arrest, accompanied by Michelle Bolsonaro, who confirmed the procedure through social networks.
Surgery needed after a serious injury
The intervention aims to repair a high-grade injury to the rotator cuff of the right shoulder, as well as other damage to the tendons, detected after a fall suffered in
January.
As explained by his lawyers, the medical studies revealed a significant deterioration that directly affects arm mobility, making surgery inevitable to avoid major complications.
An increasingly delicate health picture
Bolsonaro's physical condition has been a cause for concern for years. His environment insists that a large part of his medical problems stem from the stab he suffered during the 2018 election campaign, an episode that marked a before and after in his
health.
Since then, the former president has undergone multiple surgeries and complications, including a recent bilateral pneumonia that led to his transfer to house arrest.
House arrest and judicial tension
Bolsonaro, 71, is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest, an exceptional regime granted by
his state of health.
The measure has an initial deadline of 90 days, after which Alexandre de Moraes himself must decide whether the former president remains at home or returns to a common prison, which keeps a strong political debate open in Brazil.
Growing criticism of the actions of the Supreme Court
The figure of Moraes is at the center of the controversy. Opposition leaders and sectors related to Bolsonaro harshly question his role, accusing him of advancing institutional guarantees and concentrating power in judicial decisions
with a high political impact.
In this context, the hospitalization of the former president brings back to the fore not only his state of health, but also the underlying conflict between Bolsonarism and the highest Brazilian court.
A critical moment
The surgery takes place in a particularly delicate scenario for Bolsonaro, both personally and politically. As he seeks to recover physically, his judicial situation remains uncertain and his future will depend, to a large extent, on the decisions made by the Supreme Court itself
.
For now, attention is focused on the evolution after the operation, in a case that combines health, justice and a strong political tension that continues to set the course of Brazil.
