A few hours before a new edition of the Superclasico, Roberto Abbondanzieri shared his analysis of the confrontation between Boca and River. The former Xeneize goalkeeper, a multi-champion during his time at the club, spoke about the expectations for the match, the current situation of both teams and the performance of the
goalkeepers.
The importance of the Super Classic for Boca and River
El Pato considered that a victory could represent a decisive boost for the La Ribera team in the fight for their sporting objectives
.
“I think that if Boca wins the classic he will be champion. Boca has a lot more to lose. River was not even there to qualify among the eight a few dates ago,” he said.
However, Abbondanzieri clarified that each team's previous performance doesn't necessarily anticipate what will happen on the court. To explain his position, he recalled experiences from his own career in which Boca achieved important results despite arriving at a difficult time
.
“Just because you arrive better doesn't mean you're going to have a positive result. Whoever has a better day, does things better and doesn't make mistakes will make it through. It has nothing to do with whether they come right or wrong. I have had situations in which we were in bad shape and we were hitting the slap,” he said.
Abbondanzieri compared Álvaro Montero to Óscar Córdoba
.
The former goalkeeper was also asked about the similarities between Álvaro Montero and Óscar Córdoba, two Colombian archers
who defended Boca's goal respectively.
His answer was convincing, he ruled out a comparison between the two and highlighted the conditions of the historic Xeneize goalkeeper: “For me, Montero is not Córdoba, besides the fact that he is Colombian. Oscar was much faster, more agile; Montero is taller. We had one of the best goalkeepers in the world, I don't really compare them because Oscar was a teacher and a monster in the arc
.” Óscar Córdoba and Álvaro Montero
Anyway, Abbondanzieri valued Montero's present and highlighted the support he received in Boca, in addition to his influence on the team's results
.
“I think Montero is very well-established. I really liked that they benched him because a goal like Boca's is difficult. And today the truth is that many of Boca's points are due to him,” he said.
The Pato's support for Santiago Beltrán
Finally, the former goalkeeper referred to Santiago Beltrán, who consolidated himself in the River arc and aroused comments about a possible exit. Abbondanzieri disagreed with that possibility and considered that the young man must continue at the club to continue developing: “It's not that he was left on a plateau, but that he started very well and keeping him is very difficult. I don't agree with those rumors I read that he might leave. He has to stay. He is a goalkeeper with a future for the Argentine national team. It's important for someone from lower divisions to stay in an arc like River's.”
