Within the framework of an agenda aimed at promoting the development of nuclear energy in Latin America and the Caribbean, Argentina was part of the second edition of the SMR School organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which took place in Asunción, Paraguay.

The event brought together representatives from different countries in the region with the objective of exchanging experiences and strengthening capacities around small modular reactors (SMR).

The event continued the first edition held in Argentine territory and was attended by representatives of international organizations, government authorities and representatives of the regional nuclear sector.

During the meeting, central aspects such as project planning, regulatory frameworks, financing and the necessary preparation for the future operation of this type of technology were addressed.

The event was opened by the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, who spoke by videoconference and emphasized the value of international cooperation to ensure the safe development of SMR, a key technology for the energy future.

The intervention of Ramos Napoli

In this context, the Secretary of Nuclear Affairs of the Government of Javier Milei, Federico Ramos Napoli, emphasized the role that Argentina can play in accompanying countries that are starting their

nuclear programs.

In this regard, he highlighted both the services that the country is able to provide and its capabilities along the entire value chain. In addition, he raised the need to deepen the training of professionals, in order to respond to growing demands in

the region.

The national delegation was composed of representatives of the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA), Argentine Nucleoelectric, CONUAR, Dioxitek and Uramerica, who presented the Argentine experience in the development of the nuclear sector and its potential to contribute to regional growth.

One of the highlights was the participation of the president of Nucleoelectric Argentina, Juan Martín Campos, in a panel focused on project planning and investment models. There, the official highlighted the country's nuclear trajectory and the value of its capabilities for promoting new technologies

In his speech, he also referred to the challenges presented by new developments, especially with regard to preparing reactors for operation

In that regard, he explained that nuclear development does not begin with construction, but much earlier, starting with the consolidation of solid regulatory frameworks, the strengthening of local technical capacities and the creation of organizations prepared to guarantee a safe operation from the start.

The meeting concluded with instances of dialogue between the participating countries, aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and advancing the implementation of nuclear programs with safety and efficiency standards.

“With this participation, Argentina continues to consolidate its role in the regional nuclear scenario and to contribute its experience to the development of this technology in Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Nucleoelectric Argentina.
