According to the investigation, the detainee played a key role in planning the crime. Their identification was achieved through the analysis of WhatsApp messages carried out by the researchers, which made it possible to reconstruct links and movements prior to the attack
.
In the exchanges detected between Cruz Castillo and Simeón Pérez Marroquín, alias “El Viejo”, dated June 14, 2025, details were established about the escape route after the murder.
There, the transfer to the municipality of Florencia, in the department of Caquetá, Colombia, was defined, as well as the hotel in which they would stay while waiting for their rescue.
“El Viejo” had already been arrested in Colombia and later sentenced to 22 years and 6 months in prison. The investigation
The international investigation had several stages and had cooperation between both countries. Through the National Gendarmerie stationed in Colombia, the authorities of that country requested the intervention of the Federal Justice of Corrientes, after detecting that the suspect could be found in Argentine territory by
tracing IP addresses.
The case was carried out by the attorney general of Corrientes, Tamara Pourcel, together with the assistant prosecutor Juan Martín Mariño Fages. In parallel, the Organized Crime Tax Unit (UFECO) intervened, in collaboration with
Interpol.
During the investigations, it was determined that Cruz Castillo had an ongoing procedure in the National Directorate of Migration. The Government of Javier Milei had ordered his irregular status in the country and ordered his deportation
.
In addition, he had previously been located in connection with a case of car theft in Buenos Aires, for which he was arrested, although he later regained his freedom.
The progress of the case allowed the Federal Prosecutor's Office of Corrientes to alert the Buenos Aires Justice to the request for international arrest.
On April 20, it was confirmed that the defendant had accepted an abbreviated trial for the crime of robbery, a process that took place this Tuesday in Correctional Court 28, led by Judge María Julia Correa.
