The Yacyretá Binational Entity (EBY) was part of a series of technical conferences linked to a research project aimed at the study and preservation ofgold in the Paraná River, one of the most representative species of that ecosystem.
The activities took place in the city of Ayolas, in the entity's Historical Hall of Public Relations, and were attended by specialists from different countries.
There, the central guidelines of the program “In the wake of the tiger: marking and monitoring of gold by radiotelemetry” were presented, an initiative focused on deepening scientific knowledge about the behavior of this fish.
The meeting.
The project is promoted by the National University of the Northeast (UNNE), the Institute ofIchthyology of the Northeast (INICNE) and the University ofMassachusetts, with the support of the Argentine-Paraguayan Joint Commission of the Paraná
River (COMIP) and the coordination of the EBY.
During the conference, Dr. Andy J. Danylchuk, representative of the University of Massachusetts, together with biologist Natalia Silva, from INICNE, were in charge of the technical presentation. Both detailed the work methodology, the objectives of the research and the expected results, focusing on the application of new technologies for monitoring migratory fish
.
The central axis of the study is the use of radiotelemetry, a tool that allows the specimens to be monitored using transmitters placed on the fish. This technology facilitates the analysis of movements, migratory patterns and the use of the habitat of the dorado (Salminus brasiliensis), providing
key information for its conservation. The activities.
As part of the initiative, community participation is also promoted, especially those who are linked to sport and commercial fishing. In this regard, it seeks to promote collaboration in the identification of marked specimens and their return to the river, with the objective of ensuring the continuity of the study
.
In addition to the theoretical instances, field days were held in the area of the Yacyretá Hydroelectric Power Plant. There, tasks of scientific capture, marking and release of specimens were carried out, together with the collection of biometric data and technical exchange between specialists
.
In this first stage of the project, fish were marked that will be monitored at different points of the Paraná River, allowing accurate information to be generated about their behavior in the natural environment.
The meeting.
The data obtained from this work will be fundamental for the design of strategies for the conservation and sustainable management of the species, as well as associated ecosystems
.
The Yacyretá Binational Entity emphasized that their participation in this type of initiative is part of a policy of strengthening scientific knowledge applied to environmental management, focusing on thepreservation of biodiversity in the shared stretch of the Paraná River.
