Alejandro Domínguez apologized after being accused of racism in Brazil.
The president of Conmebol was involved in a controversy after a controversial statement about the possible exit of Brazilian teams from the Copa Libertadores
Alejandro Domínguez, Conmebol's highest authority, had to apologize after being accused of making comments considered racist in Brazil. The controversy arose from an unfortunate phrase in response to a query about the possible withdrawal of Brazilian clubs from the continental tournament.
A few days ago, Leila Pereira, Palmeiras's president, had expressed the idea that Brazilian teams should leave Conmebol to join Concacaf, as a form of protest against the constant episodes of racism in international competitions.
In this context, during the Libertadores draw ceremony, Domínguez highlighted the entity's commitment to fighting discrimination. However, in a subsequent press conference, when referring to the issue, he uttered a phrase that caused a strong reaction.

"A Libertadores without Brazilian teams? That would be like Tarzan without Cheetah (meaning a chimpanzee). Impossible", expressed the Conmebol president to the media.
The statements had a great impact in Brazil, where he was accused of an alleged case of racism. According to UOL Esporte, the phrase "fell like a bomb among Brazilian clubs", and even some leaders "doubted its veracity" upon receiving the video, to the point of thinking that "it could have been caused with artificial intelligence given the seriousness of its content".
Alejandro Domínguez's public apology
Hours after the incident, Domínguez used his social media to apologize. "Regarding my recent statements, I want to express my apologies. The expression I used is a popular phrase and I never intended to belittle or disqualify anyone. The Conmebol Libertadores is unthinkable without the participation of clubs from the 10 member countries", he stated.
He also reaffirmed his stance against discrimination: "I have always promoted respect and inclusion in football and in society, essential values for Conmebol. I reaffirm my commitment to continue working for a fairer, united, and discrimination-free football", he concluded.
