Alert in the West: Russia and Iran will carry out joint naval maneuvers in the Gulf of Oman

The navies of Russia and Iran will carry out joint naval maneuvers this Thursday in the Gulf of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean, in a new demonstration of military cooperation between both countries.

The announcement was made by Vice Admiral Hassan Maqsudlu, spokesperson for the exercises, who confirmed that the operations will seek "to develop joint maritime cooperation and strengthen relations between the navies of both countries".

The activities will take place in the Sea of Oman and adjacent areas of the Indian Ocean. Tehran did not report the exact duration or the number of units involved.

Scene of tension in the Strait of Hormuz

The Russian-Iranian deployment comes in parallel with recent exercises by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global oil and gas trade.

In that maritime corridor, considered one of the nerve centers of global energy supply, Iran mobilized military units and announced the partial closure of the channel for several hours for security reasons.

The maneuver coincides with a strong United States military presence in the Persian Gulf. President Donald Trump has defined the deployment as an "armada" prepared to respond to any provocation, while Washington keeps pressure on Tehran over its nuclear program.

Strategic alliance between Moscow and Tehran

Cooperation between Moscow and the Iranian regime has deepened in recent years. In January 2025, both countries signed a long-term strategic partnership agreement that covers defense, energy, and technology.

In addition, they coordinate positions in international forums and maintain cooperation in theaters such as Syria, where they share geopolitical interests.

For Russia, these exercises consolidate its presence in warm waters and strengthen its capacity for naval projection beyond its immediate surroundings. For Iran, the alliance represents a counterweight to Western pressure and a signal of response capability in the face of possible sanctions or blockades.

Parallel nuclear talks

The maneuvers are taking place amid indirect talks between Tehran and Washington about the Iranian nuclear program, with mediation by Oman. Although Iranian authorities described the contacts as "constructive", the United States keeps that there are still substantial differences regarding the conditions required to limit nuclear development.

In this context, the joint naval exercises reinforce the strategic dimension of the relationship between Russia and Iran and heighten concern in Western capitals over a possible rebalance of power in one of the most sensitive regions in the world.
