Ángel Di María suffered a new muscle injury and everything indicates that he will face a new period of inactivity during a key stage of the season for Benfica. This situation has raised alarms within the Portuguese club, which is already beginning to question the renewal of the contract with the Rosario native due to the frequency of his physical problems.
2025 is not being the ideal year for the world champion with the Argentina National Team. Since February, the footballer has been dealing with his third muscle ailment, the most recent being in the right thigh, while the previous ones, against Estrela da Amadora and Monaco, originated in the left thigh.
The winger's physical complications during the 2024/25 campaign began in August with an ankle sprain. However, the muscle injuries only appeared in 2025 and are a major concern for Benfica's management, just when the player was likely hoping to negotiate his continuity at the club.
El Fideo represents a significant investment for the institution because he is close to the salary cap reserved for player contracts (around 4 million euros gross per year), a fact that also brings a strategic component to the sports field. Di María's renewal involves more than just securing another player; it is a weighty decision.
At 37 and a half years old, the age he will be at the start of the next season, the Argentine doesn't easily fit into a secondary role. Rui Costa spoke about Di María's future
The club president, Rui Costa, made it clear that decisions about the future of Ángel Di María and his compatriot Nicolás Otamendi will be made at the end of the season. However, he acknowledged that both situations are different, as the defender has been informed that they count on him, at least for one more year.
Despite everything, the Argentine forward remains the favorite of the fans and coach Bruno Lage when he is fit. For that reason, he is still considered to be part of the squad that will compete in the next Club World Cup.
