Apple launches iOS 18.6: last major update for 2018 iPhones
iOS 18.6 improves the security and performance of 2018 iPhones, ahead of the definitive leap to iOS 26
Apple has just released iOS 18.6, one of the last major updates for those who still use models like iPhone XS, XS Max, or XR.
While the beta of iOS 26 is still in development and will only arrive in September, this new version of the operating system offers security improvements.

Which iPhones receive iOS 18.6?
The update is available for all models from iPhone XS onward. It can be installed by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
Additionally, equivalent versions were released for other Apple devices:
- iPadOS 18.6
- watchOS 11.6
- macOS 15.6
- tvOS 18.6
- visionOS 2.6
What's new in iOS 18.6?
Visually, there are no major changes, except in the European Union, where the interface for installing alternative stores to the App Store was slightly modified.

The most relevant changes are in the internal operation: security patches, stability improvements, and adjustments for developers. All of this aims to leave the system as polished as possible before the jump to iOS 26.
Will this be the last version for some models?
Everything indicates so. iOS 18.6 could be the last update for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, since these models won't be compatible with iOS 26.

Although a version 18.6.1 or similar with urgent patches could appear, these would only reach those three devices if security flaws are detected.
Is it worth updating if you have one of those iPhones?
Definitely. Keeping the phone updated improves security, performance, and the overall lifespan of the device.
Apple usually provides critical updates even years later. For example, in 2023, it released iOS 12.5.7 for very old models. Something similar could happen again.
