Argentina once again stood out in the global assessment of English proficiency, reaching first place in Latin America and 26th place worldwide in the English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) 2025, released this Wednesday by EF Education First.
The country achieved its highest performance in the region since this study began, confirming a sustained trend of improvement in the quality of teaching and language learning.
The Argentine capital also received special recognition: Buenos Aires was identified as the Latin American city with the best command of English and ranked 23rd among the world's major metropolises. According to those responsible for the survey, these results reflect growing maturity in the urban population's language skills and significant progress compared to previous years.

The 2025 edition of the EF EPI evaluated 123 nations and, for the first time, included measurements of writing and speaking skills applied through artificial intelligence developed by Efekta Education Group. According to the organization, this is the most robust report since 2011, both because of the breadth of the universe analyzed and the inclusion of new variables related to technological development and economic indicators.
With a total score of 575, Argentina's performance is especially relevant for the education system and for productive sectors that depend on internationalization, innovation, and global exchange. Experts consulted by the organization interpret the national growth as an opportunity to strengthen commercial, academic, and cultural ties.
The EF EPI draws on the results of the online EF SET test, a standardized assessment that classifies participants according to the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). In the 2025 version, more than 2.2 million people took the test.
EF Education First emphasized that Efekta's technology made it possible "to assess not only listening and reading comprehension, but also the ability to speak and write, essential skills for fostering understanding across cultures and borders."

Within the national territory, Mar del Plata ranked as the city with the highest English proficiency, followed by the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Bahía Blanca, Rosario, and La Plata. The measurement also recorded notable improvements in provinces such as San Juan and San Luis, which helped reduce historical differences between regions.
Growth is observed across all age groups. Among those aged 21 to 30, the average score exceeds 600 points; adults aged 31 to 40 average around 580; and the group of young people aged 18 to 20 shows consistent progress that confirms a renewed interest in improving their language skills.
Argentina leads the region
Argentina's supremacy in the region becomes even more evident when compared to other Latin American countries. Honduras appears as the second best ranked, within the "high proficiency" category, while Uruguay, Paraguay, and El Salvador remain at an intermediate level. In the capitals ranking, Buenos Aires leads by a wide margin over Santiago, Tegucigalpa, Asunción, and Lima.
In the global comparison, the Netherlands retained first place, followed by Croatia and Austria. Germany rose to fourth place, driven by significant improvement, and Norway closed out the Top 5.
