Argentina recorded a new improvement in its position within the Global Peace Index, prepared by the Institute for Economics and Peace, with marked progress starting from the arrival of Javier Milei to the Presidency.

The report's data show a continuous progress of the country in the international ranking, reaching in 2025 46th place, in a global context characterized by the general deterioration of peace levels in the world.

In 2023, the last year of the Kirchnerist government, Argentina was in 54th place in the world ranking. After Milei took office, the country improved its performance and in 2024 climbed to 47th place. The positive trend continued in 2025, when Argentina rose again and reached 46th place, consolidating itself as the safest country in Latin America and remaining only below Canada (14th place) in the entire American continent.

Argentina's progress occurred in an adverse international scenario. According to the report corresponding to 2025, the average level of global peace deteriorated by 0.36%, which represents the thirteenth deterioration in the last 17 years. At the global level, 74 countries improved their situation, while 87 worsened, reflecting a generally negative trend.

Report data

At the top of the ranking, Iceland once again occupied first place as the most peaceful country in the world, a position that it has maintained uninterruptedly since 2008. Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, and Switzerland followed, completing the group of the five countries with the best peace indicators worldwide.

Within this context, South America was the only region in the world that recorded an improvement in peace during the last year. Of the eleven countries that make up the region, seven showed progress, with Peru and Argentina standing out in particular, as they were the countries with the greatest improvements. The report notes that both cases coincided with changes of government, which occurred in 2022 in Peru and in 2023 in Argentina.

According to the study's data, Argentina is the most peaceful country in the region and recorded a 3.8% improvement in its peace levels during the last year. The report indicates that the only indicator that showed a deterioration was the financing of UN peacekeeping operations, while the rest of the variables analyzed evolved favorably.

Argentina's progress

The document highlights that the risks of political instability remained contained in Argentina, since the austerity measures promoted by President Javier Milei did not lead to mass protests or unrest of the level that had been feared previously.

In parallel, the report emphasizes that the improvement of economic indicators, including the rapid decline in inflation and unemployment, helped limit the risks to political stability.

Finally, the Global Peace Index stresses that the economic recovery that began in the second half of 2024 helped reduce the consequences of the fiscal consolidation process, in a framework that allowed Argentina to move up positions and consolidate its regional leadership in terms of security and social peace.
