After giving more than one person heart problems against Egypt in the Round of 16, the Argentine National Team will face in the quarter-finals their second European team so far in the 2026 World Cup: Switzerland.
The team led by Lionel Scaloni comes from two very tough knockout matches. Although they were far superior to the other teams in Group J (3-0 against Algeria, 2-0 against Austria, and 3-1 against Jordan), the Albiceleste struggled both in the Round of 32 and in the Round of 16.
First, against Cape Verde they could only impose themselves in extra time thanks to a goal from Cristian "Cuti" Romero that made it 3-2 in the end. Then, that same result would be repeated against "The Pharaohs", but with a very different context: they started 2-0 down and made an epic comeback before the match went to extra time to advance to the quarter-finals.

For their part, the team led by Murat Yakin has had a much calmer journey so far, but not an easier one. The "Rossocrociati" debuted with an unusual 1-1 draw against weak Qatar, but quickly recovered and took the top spot in Group B after winning against Bosnia (4-1) and the host Canada (2-1).
Later, in the Round of 32 they easily defeated Algeria 2-0 and in the Round of 16, although they had a very even match that ended 0-0 after 120 minutes, they managed to be superior to Colombia in the penalties (4-3) to make it into the top eight of the tournament.

Regarding the history, Argentines and Swiss have faced each other 7 times in friendlies and World Cups, with a record of 5 victories for the national team and two draws. The last time they met was in the Round of 16 of Brazil 2014, a match that the Albiceleste won 1-0 in extra time with a last-minute goal from Ángel Di María in the 117th minute.
