A new episode of extreme violence shook the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo when terrorists linked to the Islamic State attacked a wake in the village of Ntoyo, leaving dozens of civilians dead. According to testimonies collected by human rights organizations, the attackers posed as civilians to blend in with the attendees before

starting the attack.

According to the accounts, the terrorists, belonging to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), broke in suddenly and began to murder those present with firearms and knife weapons.

Witnesses described scenes of extreme violence: one man reported that he saw his sister killed with an axe, while another person reported that the attackers entered his house and kidnapped his four daughters.

Another testimony indicates that, after the attack, a woman found the bodies of her parents: her father had been shot dead and her mother attacked with a blunt object. “I have never seen so many bodies,” he told Amnesty International researchers, reflecting the impact of the event on the community

.

The attack is part of a series of massacres attributed to the ADF, a terrorist group that originated in Uganda that in recent years has aligned itself with the Islamic State under the name of the Province of Central Africa (ISCAP). These militias have intensified their operations in eastern Congo, directing attacks against civilian populations, in many cases Christian

communities.

The actions of these groups are characterized by rapid incursions into rural areas with little state presence, which facilitates the magnitude of the attacks and makes it difficult for security forces to respond.

Eastern Congo continues to be one of the most unstable regions on the African continent, with the presence of multiple armed groups fighting for territory and resources. In this context, extremist violence is added to local conflicts, generating a protracted crisis

.

Despite military efforts, attacks persist and the number of victims continues to rise. International organizations have warned of the urgent need to strengthen the protection of the civilian population

.

The massacre in Ntoyo once again highlights the seriousness of the situation and the direct impact of the conflict on vulnerable communities, in a region where violence continues unabated.
