The American team announced that the Brazilian will take the place of the Frenchman, who is definitively out of the team for the remainder of the season, at the Brazilian Grand Prix and will bring forward his debut in Formula 1, originally scheduled for 2027
Haas made a decision that shook the paddock of Formula 1 just days before the Brazilian Grand Prix: Esteban Ocon will not compete for the team during the 2026 season. The American team officially announced the departure of the French driver and stated that Rafael Câmarawill take his place in Interlagos, where he will have his first experience as a full-time driver in the top category.
Through a statement, the team confirmed the decision: "TGR Haas F1 Team can confirm that Esteban Ocon will no longer compete on its behalf in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship 2026". Thus, the Frenchman, who had already planned to leave the team at the end of the year, will prematurely end his tenure as a full-time driver.
Esteban Ocon will never run again at Haas
His last participation was in the free practice 2 of the Mexican Grand Prix, as he was subsequently replaced by Ryo Hirakawa, who finished 10th and scored a point after the penalties of Oscar Piastri, Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly, and did not get back in the VF-26.
Ayao Komatsu, director of Haas, explained that the decision was not easy, but it responds to the interests of the team looking ahead. "These decisions are never taken lightly, as was the case in Mexico City; but, both at that time and now, we believe that this undoubtedly serves the best interest of the team moving forward", he stated.
It is worth mentioning that the exact details that led to Ocon's departure have not yet been explained in depth. The Frenchman had acknowledged that he had a discussion with team members over differences of opinion, although he categorically denied reports suggesting a physical confrontation.
Komatsu did not give details of Ocon's departure
From Haas, Komatsu avoided giving details and emphasized that the conversations are part of an internal matter. "The discussions that ultimately took place between the team and Esteban remain an internal matter, and we will continue to respect the private nature of the situations that are discussed behind closed doors", clarified the team principal.
Rafael Câmara will make his debut in Interlagos
As Ocon bids an early farewell to Haas, Rafael Câmara will have the opportunity to advance his arrival in Formula 1. The 21-year-old Brazilian has been confirmed as a teammate of Olliver Bearman for the Brazilian Grand Prix and will make his debut in the category in front of his home crowd.
The young driver, who currently leads the Formula 2 championship and is part of the Ferrari driver academy, had already secured a spot in Haas's lineup for 2027. However, the decision not to retain Ocon and the inability to keep Hirakawa in Brazil, due to his commitments in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), accelerated the timeline for his debut in the top category.
Haas will preempt Rafael Câmara's debut
It is worth mentioning that this will not be the first time Câmara gets in the VF-26. In August, the Recife native had already had a first encounter with the American team, when he participated in a test with a car from previous seasons in Portimão. His performance left a good impression on the team and further supported their choice.
"After his excellent performance in the testing session (TPC) in August, we know well Rafa's capabilities", said Komatsu. He added: "We are looking forward to welcoming him to the team this weekend and supporting him in his Formula 1 debut at the wheel of the VF-26 in Brazil".
