The strong economic growth of the Brazilian football could have a new chapter in the Copa do Brasil. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) closed a record contract for the broadcasting rights of the tournament for the period 2027-2030 and, based on that agreement, is considering modifying the prizes that participating clubs will receive.

According to local media UOL Esporte, the new deal exceeds 4 billion reais (almost 800 million dollars at the current exchange rate) and represents an increase of nearly 80% compared to the previous contract. Thus, the competition would generate more than 1 billion reais per season.

The figure opens the possibility for the next champion to receive around 140 million reais, equivalent to just over 27 million dollars, if the current distribution scheme is maintained. That amount would even exceed the prize set for the winner of the 2026 Copa Libertadores, established by CONMEBOL at 25 million dollars, and would be about 83 times more than what the Argentine Cup offers (324 thousand dollars).

However, the CBF has not yet defined how it will distribute the new income. According to UOL Esporte, the entity will present a proposal to the clubs at an upcoming League meeting and will listen to their opinions before establishing the final format.

Currently, about 80% of the income generated by the audiovisual rights of the Copa do Brasil is allocated to the teams as prizes. Within that distribution, there is a marked difference between the final stages: the champion receives 78 million reais (around 15 million dollars), while the runner-up gets 34 million (about 6.5 million dollars), in addition to the amounts accumulated in the previous rounds.

With the leap that the new contract will bring, the CBF is studying how to prevent the increase from being concentrated on the winner. The intention, as reported by the Brazilian media, is to analyze a scheme that allows to also strengthen the rewards corresponding to the different phases of the tournament.

The modification will also need to consider new expenses for the organization itself. The next cycle will include costs related to the television production of the competition, a task that is currently not contemplated in the same way and will impact the money available for distribution.

In this context, the possibility of the champion reaching 140 million reais still depends on the Confederation maintaining the current proportion. The final formula is under discussion and the opinion of the clubs will carry weight in the process, although the final decision on the distribution will be in the hands of the CBF.
