The former communist candidate from Juntos por el Perú, Roberto Sánchez, announced that he will file a petition with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to challenge the conduct of the second electoral round in Peru, in which he was defeated by the candidate from Fuerza Popular, Keiko Fujimori.

The submission will take place after the National Jury of Elections (JNE) rejected the petitions put forward by his political group and confirmed the validity of the electoral process.

In a message posted on the social network X, Sánchez stated that there was a “serious impact” on the electoral process and claimed that during the second round the rules of the game were changed, especially regarding the voting conducted at Peruvian consulates abroad. In this regard, he asserted that his group has the “legal and legitimate right” to approach the IACHR to request a review of the case.

However, Peruvian electoral authorities have already responded to the challenges presented by the leftist candidate. The National Jury of Elections dismissed the annulment requests promoted by Juntos por el Perú, considering that they did not meet the legal requirements to alter the election results. The final difference between Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez was close to 49,000 votes.

In the weeks following the election, Sánchez insisted that there were irregularities in the process, particularly in the votes cast by Peruvian citizens residing abroad. Nevertheless, so far the resolutions issued by the electoral bodies have upheld the official result that declared Fujimori the winner.

The decision to approach the IACHR has generated new reactions within the Peruvian political landscape. Various leaders called for recognition of the electoral result and respect for the decisions of the institutions responsible for administering and overseeing the elections. Among them, former candidate Marisol Pérez Tello stated that it is appropriate to accept Keiko Fujimori's victory and move past the fraud allegations to advance towards a stage of political stability.

While the judicial and administrative process in Peru concluded with the proclamation of Fujimori as the elected president, Sánchez will now seek for the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to analyze his complaint regarding the conduct of the second electoral round.
