The urban transportation system is going through an operational collapse under the administration of Mayor Daniel Passerini. The lack of maintenance has led to a series of bus fires that put passengers' lives at risk. The latest incident took place in the Comunidad Renault neighborhood, where a bus belonging to the company SiBus was consumed by flames.

Drivers and the opposition warn that the service will not be able to meet the demand at the start of the school year. They estimate that there are barely 600 buses in operation when 800 are needed to cover the peak school season. The shortage of vehicles threatens to leave thousands of students and workers stranded in the coming weeks.

The municipality is trying to downplay the seriousness of the issue by talking about an alleged "gradual recovery" of the system. However, the reality on the streets shows buses that break down due to basic mechanical failures. Passerini is not managing to guarantee an essential and safe service after two years of permanent improvisation.

Dangerous buses and state neglect

Councilor Elisa Caffaratti reported that there have already been 4 buses that have caught fire so far in 2026. "A bus doesn't catch fire by chance, it is the result of improvisation," stated the Radical councilor. The lack of investment turns the buses into real death traps for users of the system.

Frente Cívico submitted a request for reports on the company FAM after detecting that 40 buses failed the vehicle inspection. The councilors demand to know how many vehicles are circulating without the minimum technical safety conditions required. There is a suspicion that the municipality is turning a blind eye to the irregularities of friendly service providers.

Pablo Farías, from UTA, confirmed that the companies only carry out repairs when the buses have already broken down. He explained that the accumulated grease on the chassis and the heat create the ideal scenario for fire incidents. "With this outlook I do not foresee a good start to the school year," warned the union leader.

The excuse of subsidies and the narrative

Passerini's government keeps insisting on blaming the removal of national subsidies for the evident operational collapse. They use the rhetoric of the "present State" to justify a deficient service that punishes citizens. Meanwhile, residents travel in buses that do not brake, do not have air conditioning, and catch fire.

The official response describes the incidents as events that "do not alter the general course of the system." This insensitivity to the real danger demonstrates the administration's total disconnection from everyday problems. Córdoba's transportation system needs private investment and technical oversight, not more political excuses for statism.
