Córdoba: proposes arrests of up to 15 days for drivers who repeatedly drive under the influence

The measure seeks to modify behaviors and strengthen road safety in the city

The Córdoba Deliberative Council is analyzing a proposal to amend the local Coexistence Code. The initiative contemplates the application of arrests of up to 15 days for individuals who repeatedly drive under the influence of alcohol. The measure is still in the legislative evaluation stage.

The head of the Administrative Justice of Infractions, Juan Manuel Aráoz, explained that the initiative is based on concerns about road safety. In statements to Cadena 3, he asserted that "the penalty of arrest can be a positive mechanism to modify behavior". The proposal aims to deter dangerous driving behaviors.

According to the Provincial Constitution, municipalities have the authority to impose arrests. Aráoz indicated that the intention is to use this resource in cases of repeated offenses related to blood alcohol content. The possibility of applying similar sanctions in the environmental field was also mentioned.

Changes in the Coexistence Code

Currently, the most severe penalties for repeated blood alcohol offenses include fines exceeding five million pesos (11,023 pounds). The suspension of the driver's license is also contemplated. In addition, there is a requirement to complete road safety training courses.

In Córdoba Capital, blood alcohol controls are carried out regularly. This was indicated by Aráoz himself, who defended the system as a preventive tool. The intention is to complement the operations with stricter sanctions in repeated cases.

The proposal is currently under consideration within the Deliberative Council. It is expected that in the coming days it will be determined whether the amendment to the Code is approved or not. If it moves forward, it would mark a significant change in local traffic policies.
