PJ and UCR mayors from Córdoba are not implementing austerity measures and are demanding more funds from Javier Milei.

While the National Government achieves fiscal balance, local leaders demand more resources without adjusting their own expenses

About thirty mayors from the Unión department in Córdoba, belonging to the PJ, UCR, and local political groups, signed an open letter addressed to President Javier Milei. In the document, they express their concern about the reduction of revenue-sharing funds and the impact of economic adjustment on their municipalities. The letter was drafted at a meeting of the Regional Community Unión presided over by Mayor Juan Vassia of Idiazábal.

The municipal leaders argue that national economic measures have caused a contraction in economic activity and a decrease in tax revenue. They maintain that this situation compromises the sustainability of municipal finances and affects the provision of public services. They also point out that the Nation collects 80% of taxes, while provinces and municipalities receive 15% and 5%, respectively.

Despite these complaints, the National Government has managed to reverse a financial deficit of 4.4% of GDP in 2023, achieving a surplus of 0.3% in 2024. This result is attributed to a rigorous fiscal adjustment that included a reduction in public spending and an increase in tax revenue.

Seeking more resources without considering cutting their own expenses

The mayors who signed the open letter haven't announced any measures to reduce expenses in their respective administrations. Instead, they request greater transfers of funds from the National Government to maintain their spending levels. This stance contrasts with the adjustment policy implemented by Milei's administration, which seeks to balance public accounts.

The lack of willingness to make cuts at the municipal level raises questions about the consistency of the complaints. Meanwhile, the National Government implements measures to reduce the deficit, local governments are reluctant to adopt similar policies. This situation creates tensions in the relationship between different levels of government.

The fiscal balance achieved by the National Government has been highlighted as a significant achievement in the country's economic policy. In contrast, the resistance of local governments to adjust their expenses could hinder the sustainability of their administrations in the long term. The need to adapt to the fiscal guidelines of the national government will become increasingly evident.
