Mario Vargas Llosa, an icon of Hispanic American literature and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010, passed away this Sunday at the age of 89.

The Peruvian writer died in Lima, surrounded by his family. There will be no public tributes, at the express request of his loved ones.

The family requested privacy to bid him farewell in intimacy

The news was confirmed by his son Álvaro through a message on the social network X. "With deep sorrow, we announce that our father, Mario Vargas Llosa, has passed away today in Lima, surrounded by his family and in peace," he wrote.

The statement emphasized the author's and his inner circle's wishes: "We trust in having the space and privacy to bid him farewell with family and close friends". The writer's remains will be cremated and no public events will be held.

He spent his last years in Lima, away from the spotlight

Vargas Llosa had been living in Lima since 2022, after decades of residing in cities like Madrid and Paris. Last March, he turned 89, and his son shared his last public images on social media.

His health had been kept private in recent times, although it was known that he had experienced some complications in recent years.

Author of classics like The Time of the Hero and Conversation in the Cathedral, Vargas Llosa was much more than a novelist. He also stood out as an essayist, journalist, and active figure in the political life of Latin America.

He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010, a recognition that crowned a career of global impact. His work was translated into more than 30 languages and analyzed in universities worldwide.

Alongside Gabriel García Márquez, Julio Cortázar, and Carlos Fuentes, he was one of the central figures of the Latin American Boom. This movement boosted the international projection of the region's literature in the 60s and 70s.
