President Donald Trump announced this Friday that he will invalidate all documents and executive orders signed during Joe Biden's administration through the use of the "autopen," a mechanical device historically used by various presidents to reproduce the presidential signature on official documents.
According to Trump, approximately 92% of the documents issued between 2021 and 2025 were signed with this mechanism without the direct authorization of the then president.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the use of the autopen is not permitted without the specific approval of the President of the United States and accused Biden's close advisers of operating the device irregularly.
Based on this premise, he announced the cancellation of all decrees and other documents that do not have a signature directly affixed by Biden.

The president also maintained that, if Biden claims to have authorized those processes, he could face perjury charges. Trump asserted that the practice may have allowed unelected officials to make decisions without the explicit endorsement of the president, which compromises the legitimacy of measures adopted by the previous administration.
The use of the autopen has precedents in several presidencies and has been employed to sign everything from routine correspondence to official proclamations. Its legal validity is usually linked to the existence of presidential authorization, either explicit or documented.
An investigation led by Republican lawmakers this year detected internal communications in which Democratic government staff expressed doubts about how to implement instructions delivered verbally.

Trump had already previously reversed several of Biden's executive orders and questioned some of his clemency decisions, particularly those signed in the final days of his term. Biden, meanwhile, stated ambiguously in a recent interview that he did authorize the use of his signature in certain pardon processes.
For now, it is not clear which entity will be responsible for verifying which documents were signed with presidential authorization and which would be invalidated under the criteria announced by the current administration.
