The Wall Street Journal revealed that the United States government is working to facilitate a political transition in Cuba

A recent report indicated that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, would be actively promoting a strategy aimed at putting an end to Cuba's communist regime before the end of the year.

According to the publication, the objective of the U.S. government would be to move toward a regime change on the island, which has been under communist control for almost seven decades.

According to what the Wall Street Journal revealed, officials in the Trump administration are working on different courses of action intended to facilitate a political transition in Cuba. In that context, the United States would be seeking contacts within the Cuban regime itself who can help remove the current communist leaders from power.

The outlet pointed out that, for the moment, there is no defined "concrete plan" to end the current political system on the island. However, sources cited by the report maintain that the Cuban government's control over the country is going through one of its most fragile moments in decades.

U.S. officials told the Journal that Cuba's economic situation has deteriorated severely after the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. According to those statements, Cuba's economy is on the brink of collapse, which increases internal pressure on the regime.

U.S. intelligence assessments mentioned in the report warn that the island is facing a chronic shortage of basic goods and medications, in addition to suffering from frequent blackouts. This scenario, according to the official sources cited, has deepened social unrest and further weakened the Cuban regime's ability to respond.

One of the central factors in the deterioration would be the energy situation. Cuba depended on Maduro for the supply of oil, and after the events in Venezuela, the island could be left without fuel in a matter of weeks. In this context, the Trump administration would aim to prevent the continued flow of Venezuelan oil to Cuba, with the purpose of further weakening the communist regime.

The precedent of Venezuela

The report also keeps that the strategy used recently in Venezuela is considered by U.S. officials as a possible model for the Cuban case. The capture of Maduro by U.S. forces and the subsequent concessions obtained from the Venezuelan regime are presented as precedents that influence the White House's view of Cuba.

The January 3 military operation, intended to arrest Maduro, required the collaboration of an asset within the inner circle of the then Venezuelan dictator. With that precedent, the Trump administration would be trying to identify a similar potential asset within the Cuban government.

In that context, U.S. officials told the Wall Street Journal that representatives of the U.S. government have held meetings with Cuban exiles and civic groups both in Miami and in Washington, with the objective of exploring possible transition scenarios.

The report adds that the White House is considering increasing pressure on Cuba while, in parallel, it could negotiate a possible "off-ramp" for the country's main leaders. Among them, it mentions Raúl Castro, 94 years old, brother of the late Fidel Castro, and Cuban dictator Miguel Díaz-Canel.

President Trump himself referred publicly to the situation at the beginning of this year. According to what was indicated, the President warned the Cuban government that it was time to "reach a deal".

"THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY FOR CUBA! ZERO!", Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on January 11. "I strongly recommend that you reach a deal BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE", he added.
