Boca's 2-0 victory over Aldosivi as visitors in matchday 7 of Group A of the Torneo Clausura did not leave an entirely positive outcome. Near the end of the match, Agustín Marchesín requested to be substituted due to a physical problem that raised concerns among the coaching staff led by Miguel Ángel Russo.
In the coming days, the former Gremio player will undergo medical tests to determine the severity of the injury, although some sources already indicate a tear in the soleus muscle of his right leg that would sideline him for at least 15 days. If he is not fit for the match against Rosario Central in the eighth round, his replacement could be Sergio Romero.
According to journalist Diego Monroig, although at first Russo did not have "Chiquito" in his plans for this part of the season, the goalkeeper continued training with the squad and established himself as an alternative.
"The coaching staff believes he supports the group, pushes forward, and is a good advisor. Russo's decision was clear when he spoke with him in the United States: he was not going to consider him. Even Newell’s was negotiating with Chiquito Romero when Keylor Navas left, but there was no agreement," the journalist explained.
He added: "If he continues training with the squad, it is because the coaching staff believes he is a professional who contributes. He traveled to Mar del Plata, to the United States, and was the fourth goalkeeper in the Club World Cup."
This is not a minor detail: in his three spells at Boca, Russo has always favored experienced goalkeepers over young players. In 2007 he chose Caranta with Bobadilla as backup, and in his second stint (2020-2021) he trusted Andrada, Marcos Díaz, Javier García, and Rossi, relegating young players like Manuel Roffo.
Meanwhile, Romero's last official appearance for Boca was on November 23 of last year, in the 0-0 draw against Huracán in Parque Patricios. He was then operated on his knee and lost ground after the arrival of the current coach.
