Funcom has launched Chapter 3, the most ambitious free update for Dune: Awakening. The goal is clear. It is to recapture the initial interest, respond to the community's long-standing demands, and strengthen the long-term experience. The launch arrives accompanied by the paid DLC Raiders of the Broken Lands, designed to expand building and customization options.
This update marks a turning point for the survival game set in Frank Herbert's universe, especially with a view to its future arrival on consoles.
A deeper and more challenging endgame
One of the most important changes in Chapter 3 is focused on advanced content. The Landsraad system has been completely redesigned. Now, players can choose a Great House with which to ally themselves. This decision unlocks repeatable missions, rank progression, and exclusive rewards tied to the selected faction.
In addition, ten new locations have been added to the upper map. Among them there are freely accessible challenge zones and the new Imperial Test Stations. These spaces are designed for repeating content, improving gear, and facing challenges of increasing difficulty.
New specialization and progression system
Dune: Awakening lanza Chapter 3, su actualización gratuita más ambiciosa
Chapter 3 introduces a specialization-based progression system. Players can now define their playstyle through five main paths: crafting, gathering, exploration, combat, and sabotage.
Each specialization has its own advancements, specific rewards, and exclusive technologies. This allows greater character customization and clearer progression according to the decisions that are made.
This is complemented by the new augmentation system, which allows players to enhance level 6 weapons and armor with modifiers obtained in the Test Stations. These augments are tradable between players, which reinforces the internal economy and social interaction, although Funcom acknowledges that crafting still needs fine-tuning.
Base taxes are removed
One of the most frequently repeated complaints from the community was finally addressed. Funcom has completely removed the base tax system. From now on, players only have to manage the power supply to maintain their structures.
This decision seeks to reduce frustration and prevent loss of progress, especially for users who were absent for long periods.
Content for returning players and more narrative
To facilitate returning, a special package was implemented for players who come back to the game. The content is adjusted to previous progress in the research tree and helps reduce the gap with those who never stopped playing.
Meanwhile, the narrative component expands with a new story chapter. There are brand-new missions, reunions with key characters, and narrative challenges that deepen the game's universe.
New weapons and expansion of the building system
Chapter 3 also expands combat with two new weapons: the Pyrorocket and the dual blades, in addition to a complete overhaul of the rapier. This opens new strategies in both PvE and PvP.
Meanwhile, the Raiders of the Broken Lands DLC incorporates 74 structural pieces and 17 decorative ones, along with armor, outfits, weapon variants, and cosmetic options inspired by the Empire's smugglers.
With these changes, Dune: Awakening is consolidating itself as one of the most relevant titles on Steam in 2025 and is preparing for its arrival on PlayStation and Xbox in 2026, with a future of expansions that promises to continue expanding its universe.
