The murder of Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old identified as a right-wing activist, has caused deep shock in France and has led to a judicial investigation for homicide that already includes eleven people in custody.
The assault took place on Saturday in Lyon, outside a conference given by Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan, a member of the radical left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI).
According to the Lyon prosecutor's office, Deranque was beaten by a group of activists linked to the far left after a confrontation that occurred in the vicinity of the event.

The videos of the assault, widely circulated on social media, show moments of great violence and have intensified public outrage. The young man died hours later as a result of the injuries he sustained.
On Monday, the Lyon prosecutor announced the formal opening of a murder investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the attack and determine individual responsibilities. So far, eleven people have been arrested on suspicion of direct or indirect involvement in the events.
Among those arrested is a parliamentary assistant to left-wing lawmaker Raphaël Arnault, who publicly confirmed the arrest and stated that his aide has suspended all parliamentary activity while the judicial process moves forward. The presence of a member of the institutional environment among those detained has added political pressure to the case.

The murder has triggered immediate reactions across the political spectrum. The LFI leader, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, called for calm and asked people to avoid incitement to violence, emphasizing that it is up to the courts to determine responsibility.
From the opposition, the president of National Rally, Jordan Bardella, held the radical left politically responsible and accused its leaders of fostering a climate of confrontation that, in his view, encourages episodes of violence. French President Emmanuel Macron also issued an appeal for calm to prevent an escalation of tensions.
Deranque's death comes in a context of growing political polarization in France, with local elections scheduled for next month and presidential elections next year. Analysts point out that the hardening of rhetoric between sectors of the far left and the right has heightened social tension in recent months.
Meanwhile, as the judicial investigation continues, the murder of Quentin Deranque has become a symbol of the deterioration of the political climate and of the risk that ideological confrontation will turn into physical violence. The authorities insist that fully clarifying the facts will be key to preventing the case from deepening divisions in French society even further.
