Jerome Powell, chairman of the United States Federal Reserve, is reportedly planning to resign amid a dispute with Trump over interest rates
The director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), Bill Pulte, an official from the Trump administration, suggested on Friday that the chairman of the Federal Reserve (Fed), Jerome Powell, might be considering his resignation. In a statement published on the social network X and on the agency's website, Pulte said he was "encouraged" by reports about a possible resignation by Powell, stating that "it would be the right decision for the United States" and that the economy would flourish after his departure. However, there has not been any public confirmation to support that claim and the Federal Reserve declined to comment on the matter. A spokesperson for the agency recalled that Powell has repeatedly expressed his intention to complete his term, which ends on May 15, 2026. In addition, his position as a member of the central bank's board of governors extends until January 31, 2028. Bill Pulte, confirmed in his position in March, has been an outspoken critic of Powell, especially for his handling of monetary policy. Since taking office, he has repeatedly urged Powell to lower interest rates and has argued that the housing market would improve significantly if cuts were implemented.
