The Democratic senator from Pennsylvania provided reasons for his vote in favor of ending the government shutdown in the recent Senate vote

Pennsylvania Democratic Senator, John Fetterman, distanced himself from his party's official line by voting alongside Republicans to reopen the federal government, amid the debate over the extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies.
His decision, backed by nine other Democrats, caused strong criticism from the progressive wing, but the senator defended his stance as an act of responsibility and common sense.
During an interview aired Monday on NPR's All Things Considered, Fetterman clarified that ACA (Affordable Care Act) subsidies "are not being taken away by Republicans," but rather were designed by Democrats themselves to expire at the end of the year.
El demócrata explicó que fueron los propios demócratas quienes diseñaron los subsidios del ACA para que mantengan su vencimiento en el presente año
According to the senator, the discussion centers on how and when to extend those benefits, not on eliminating them. "They are saying that we can have a conversation to extend them, and I hope that's the case," he stated.
The legislator pointed out that Republicans simply asked for a commitment to vote on the extension of the subsidies, instead of keeping the country paralyzed by a government shutdown. "We can find a way out without sinking the entire nation into chaos," Fetterman maintained, who added that he expects a vote on the issue in the Senate soon.
The bipartisan agreement allowed the government to reopen on Sunday, although without a specific date to address the health subsidies. Still, the gesture was interpreted by many Republicans as a sign that cooperation between parties is still possible.
Not everyone in the Democratic Party shared that view. On The View, Democratic host Sunny Hostin harshly questioned the senator, recalling that figures such as socialist Bernie Sanders called the decision "a horrific mistake" and that California Governor Gavin Newsom considered it "pathetic" and "a surrender."

Hostin accused Fetterman and his colleagues of "bringing a butter knife to a gunfight," arguing that Democrats had the political momentum after their recent electoral victories and should have kept the pressure on the Republican Party.
However, Fetterman remained firm. "I don't need lessons from Bernie or the governor of California. They represent deeply blue constituencies. I represent a purple state, and I must govern for everyone," he replied. He also made a sarcastic remark about those who cited Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene in their criticism: "If Democrats are celebrating 'Crazy Pants,' that's their problem."
Meanwhile, from the Republican perspective, Fetterman's stance reinforces the narrative that the GOP is not seeking to eliminate health subsidies, but to review their sustainability and ensure that public spending is responsible. Republicans argue that keeping the government open was an unavoidable priority, and that budget discussions should take place through normal legislative channels, not under the pressure of a crisis.
