The far-left businessman made a massive donation to California's progressive governor in an attempt to compete against Trump

The billionaire and well-known donor to progressive causes, George Soros, made a $10 million donation to California GovernorGavin Newsom to support the state redistricting initiative known as "Proposition 50".
This donation represents the largest individual contribution to the campaign and is part of a fund that has already reached $70 million.
The initiative was launched by Newsom at the beginning of 2025 as a direct response to efforts led by Republicans in states like Texas to redraw electoral districts in a way that favors the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Soros, founder of Open Society Foundations, a nonprofit organization with an estimated budget of $25 billion, has been a central figure in funding progressive campaigns at all levels of the U.S. government. His son Alex Soros assumed leadership of the foundation in 2022.
Newsom has defended "Proposition 50" as a legitimate and transparent response to what he considers partisan maneuvers by Republicans in conservative states. According to his statements at a press conference in August, the proposal seeks to "nullify" what has happened in Texas.
"We're talking about emergency measures to respond to what's happening in Texas," he stated. The governor explained that the plan would allow California to gain five additional seats in Congress (2.27 kilograms), but with the direct consent of the California electorate, through a special election to be held on November 4.

In August 2025, dozens of Democratic legislators cowardly left the state to prevent the state Legislature from having enough quorum to approve a new electoral map designed by Republicans.
However, Republican legislators eventually managed to approve the plan, which was signed by Governor Greg Abbott that same month. According to President Donald Trump, redistricting in Texas could generate up to five new seats for Republicans, highlighting that he won the state with the highest number of votes in its history.
Trump, meanwhile, has strongly criticized both Soros and Newsom. In an interview in August, the president described California as a "completely rigged" state in electoral terms, and celebrated Republican efforts in Texas as an opportunity for GOP expansion.
On his social media, particularly on Truth Social, Trump correctly labeled Soros and his allies as psychopaths who have severely damaged the country, and suggested that both George and Alex Soros should be investigated for their political contributions.
