The absence of the champions from the main European leagues in the first edition sparked a strong debate, and changes are already being considered for the future
After the first edition of the revamped Club World Cup, FIFA began working on adjustments for the 2029 edition. The main point under discussion is the limit of teams per country, which currently excludes major champions from the most important leagues.
The proposal circulating at the Zurich headquarters is to raise the maximum quota to three clubs per nation, which would allow the most competitive leagues not to be limited in representation. In 2025, for example, neither Liverpool (Premier League), Barcelona (Spain), nor Napoli (Italy) were able to participate despite winning their domestic tournaments, which caused strong criticism.
La próxima edición podría tener 3 equipos por país
Additionally, FIFA is considering expanding the tournament to 48 teams and holding it every two years, although this latter initiative faces strong opposition from UEFA.
Meanwhile, Victor Montagliani, president of CONCACAF and vice president of FIFA, confirmed that they will hold talks with the European body and the European Club Association (ECA) to define possible changes to the tournament with the aim of maintaining the success of the first edition of the competition held in the United States.
Brazil aims to host in 2029
Parallel to this structural debate, Brazilhas once again presented itself as a candidate to host the 2029 edition. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), through official Michelle Ramalho, has already conveyed its intention in meetings with FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom. The Brazilian proposal is supported by its organization of the 2027 Women's World Cup and by the proximity to the 2030 Centenary World Cup, which will begin in South America.

With the format under full discussion and with Brazil determined to submit its bid, the 2029 Club World Cup is shaping up to be an edition marked by tensions between FIFA and UEFA and by the competition among countries seeking to host the event.
