The Finnish Ministry of Defence opened an investigation after detecting a Russian aircraft that allegedly entered Finnish territory, in a new episode of tension with Moscow
Finland suspects that a Russian aircraft entered its airspace on Thursday, according to the country's Ministry of Defense. Finnish authorities indicated that the incident is under investigation and that any possible violation of its airspace is considered a serious matter.
The Finnish Minister of Defense, Antti Häkkänen, confirmed that authorities detected the aircraft and stated that the Government is taking the episode seriously while determining exactly what happened.

The incident occurs in a context of growing tension between Finland and Russia. Both countries share a land border of approximately 1,340 kilometers, and Helsinki has significantly strengthened its surveillance and defense capabilities since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
This is not the first incident of this type recorded during 2026. Finnish authorities had previously indicated that two Russian military aircraftmay have entered its airspace during May and June. On those occasions, Finland summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires to express its concern.
The situation is also unfolding amid growing concern among Nordic and Baltic countries about possible incidents related to the war in Ukraine. Finland has also recorded episodes involving drones that entered or were detected near its airspace, prompting authorities to strengthen their surveillance systems.
The head of Finnish military intelligence, Major General Pekka Turunen, had previously warned about the increased risk of drones related to the war in Ukraine straying into Finnish territory.
The episode also occurs after other recent incidents in the airspace of NATO member countries. In August, an Italian fighter jet from the Alliance shot down an unknown-origin drone that had entered Latvian airspace, near the border with Russia.

Finland joined NATO in 2023, after abandoning decades of military non-alignment following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since then, the Finnish border has become one of the Alliance's strategic points against Russia.
The Finnish Government thus maintains a posture of maximum vigilance against any incursions, in a scenario where aerial incidents in northern and eastern Europe have become an increasing concern for countries bordering Russia.
