After years of systematic abandonment and disinvestment by populist administrations that undermined national sovereignty, the administration of President Javier Milei has decided to restore dignity and firepower to the Argentine Army.
In an unprecedented strategic decision, the Argentine Army has awarded the purchase of 400 Unimog U4000 tactical trucks. This operation, representing an investment of US$ 88 million, constitutes a fundamental pillar in the ambitious modernization plan aimed at ultimately achieving a fleet of 1,000 units.

According to international analyst Andrei Serbin Pont, this award stands out as “one of the largest military truck purchases in recent decades”.
The re-equipping project is not an isolated event, but a state policy that began to take shape with previous milestones under this new management approach:
In September 2025, the process began with the acquisition of 48 vehicles.
Subsequently, an expansion of 16 additional units was added.
The current phase of 400 trucks consolidates the definitive qualitative leap for ground forces.
From a technical perspective, the new Unimog U4000 are designed to operate in the most hostile terrains where conventional vehicles fail, thanks to their 4x4 traction and superior capability in water crossings, powertrain, and load capacity.
These armored vehicles of freedom come to replace the already historic and worn-out Unimog 416 and 421, which have served for over five decades. The estimated cost of each unit ranges between US170,000∗∗and∗∗US 200,000, a figure that guarantees not only the hardware but also a robust logistical support.
A turning point in this contract is the long-term operational security. Unlike improvised purchases of the past, this contract includes a comprehensive maintenance, technical assistance, and guaranteed spare parts provision by the manufacturer to ensure the fleet's lifespan.

The choice of model was not random: in 2025, a rigorous operational technical evaluation was conducted where various international manufacturers competed, resulting in the design that best adapts to Argentine geography being the winner.
Historically, Argentina was the first country outside of Germany to produce Unimog vehicles, and with this volume acquisition, a tradition of excellence that had not been seen since 1981, the year when more than 1,000 light Mercedes-Benz 230 G vehicles were incorporated, is being revived.
