Who is the Uruguayan Cardinal Daniel Sturla: the Latin American with a chance to become Pope

The Uruguayan cardinal spoke with Feinmann and was blunt about his possible future as Supreme Pontiff

Daniel Sturla is the only Latin American with concrete chances of being the next Pope. The Uruguayan cardinal broke his silence in an interview and was clear about his intentions.

In a conversation with Eduardo Feinmann on Radio Mitre, the Archbishop of Montevideo replied sincerely about his stance on a possible papal election.

Can Latin America have another Pope?

The next conclave will be on May 7, and names are starting to circulate strongly. Among them, Sturla's name appeared, who is one of the 23 Latin American cardinals with a vote in the College of Cardinals.

Feinmann asked him bluntly: "Would you like to be Pope?" The answer was direct: "Honestly, no". He also added that he doesn't even consider that possibility.

"The option goes another way"

The cardinal assured that, to choose a new Supreme Pontiff, many factors must be considered. "From the geographical aspect to each one's formation", he explained.

"There are very well-prepared people to be Pope," he added, in a gesture of humility that has characterized him for years. Even so, his name remains among the strong possible candidates.

Is Sturla too young?

Feinmann highlighted another point: his age. At 65 years old, Daniel Sturla is one of the youngest candidates among the group of "papabili."

"Today that age is young, given current life expectancies. Although that is always in God's hands," the Archbishop reflected.

A low profile that adds points

Far from appearing eager to occupy Peter's throne, Sturla made his style clear: low profile, vocation, and pastoral commitment. Values that, precisely, many within the Church consider key at this stage.

For now, he prefers to remain silent and continue his path as Archbishop of Montevideo. But his name is already resonating strongly in Rome.
