Australia's United Cup already has an unforgettable chapter for Argentine tennis. In the early hours of Tuesday, a series of other results ended up confirming historic news: the national team qualified for the quarterfinals of the tournament for the first time since its creation in 2023. The team led by Sebastián Gutiérrez advanced as the best runner-up at the Perth venue.
The Albiceleste squad, made up of Sebastián Báez (43rd), Marco Trungelliti (130th), Solana Sierra (66th), María Lourdes Carlé (157th in doubles), Guido Andreozzi (32nd in doubles) and Nicole Fossa Huergo (104th), had an outstanding week, with solid performances and a high point in Báez's victory over Taylor Fritz, world number 6, which proved decisive in keeping their chances alive.
Baez fue uno de los puntos destacados de Argentina con su victoria ante Fritz
Argentina had closed the group stage with a resounding 3-0 against Spain and a narrow 2-1 defeat against the United States. This balance of four wins and two losses was enough to remain hopeful, although the qualification was left dependent on what happened in other ties.
The favorable outcome came after Greece's victory over Great Britain and, above all, because of the result of the clash between Italy and France. There, Arthur Rinderknech was the protagonist by defeating Flavio Cobolli 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5) and 7-5, after saving two match points.
That victory eliminated Italy and definitively opened the door for the Albiceleste, which thus surpassed its previous performances in the tournament, where it had finished third in its group in 2023 and 2025 (in 2024 it had not participated).
Argentina jugará ante Suiza
Already in the quarterfinals, Argentina will face Switzerland this Wednesday at 3 in the morning. In principle, the Argentine team was supposed to face the United States, first in Group A, but since both had already met in the initial phase, the North American team will play against Greece and the Albiceleste will go for a new milestone against the Swiss team.
