In the depths of the Black Sea, a team of scientists and archaeologists identified a Greek ship over 2400 years old that remained virtually intact. The finding, made off the coast of Bulgaria, offers an unprecedented look at the navigation techniques of ancient Greece and how commercial vessels were built during that time.
The ship was located in 2017 at more than two kilometers below the surface. At that time, it became the oldest known intact ancient shipwreck. The discovery was part of the Black Sea MAP project, an international research initiative led by the University of Southampton that explored over 2000 square kilometers of the seabed.
This is a Greek commercial ship that would have sailed around 400 BC. It measures approximately 23 meters in length and retains elements that rarely survive in shipwrecks of that antiquity. Among the pieces that most surprised specialists are the mast, much of the upper structure, and the rudders with which the Greeks steered the vessel.
To determine its age, researchers extracted a wood sample and applied carbon dating. The results confirmed that the ship is at least 2400 years old. Furthermore, its design notably matches the representations of ships that appear on Greek pottery from the same period. Until this discovery, such vessels were only known through those images.
Why it was preserved in such good condition
The exceptional preservation of the ship is explained by the particular conditions of the Black Sea. At great depths, the water is almost completely devoid of oxygen. This lack of oxygen prevented the presence of organisms that normally feed on wood and cause the progressive destruction of sunken hulls.
Thanks to this anoxic environment, most of the structure remained protected for over two millennia. The result is an archaeological record of extraordinary value, allowing the study of construction and navigation details that until now could only be inferred from indirect sources.
During the same research campaign, the team documented a total of 65 shipwrecks from different periods. However, the Greek ship stood out for combining remarkable antiquity with a level of preservation that specialists deemed exceptional. The finding not only provides concrete data about Greek maritime trade but also reinforces the importance of the oceanographic conditions of the Black Sea for underwater archaeology.
The Black Sea MAP project demonstrated that the depths of this region hold a first-rate historical heritage. The identification of this intact vessel from 2400 years ago marks a milestone in the study of ancient navigation and opens the door to new research on how Eastern Mediterranean societies moved and traded in classical antiquity.
