'Homo Argentum' surpassed one million viewers and leads the national box office

Cohn and Duprat's film starring Francella has surpassed one million viewers and leads the national box office

The national productionHomo Argentum confirmed in its second weekend in theaters a significant milestone for the Argentine film industry: it surpassed one million viewers and established itself as the most-watched film in the country for the second consecutive week.

The film directed by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat, with Guillermo Francella in the leading role, reached 1,071,851 tickets sold according to data from the consulting firm Ultracine, after adding 379,322 tickets between Thursday and Sunday.

This is the first Argentine fiction film to surpass one million viewers since Argentina, 1985, which premiered in September 2022.

The comparison with that title is inevitable, although  in this case the phenomenon is occurring more rapidly and in a context of partial recovery for the sector after years of economic crisis, inflation, and a general decline in theater attendance.

The success of Homo Argentum is also atypical when considering the usual market dynamics. While  the most popular productions typically experience  a 40 to 50 percent drop in their second week, the film lost only 22 percent compared to the previous weekend.

With 527,879 viewers in its first five days, it had already set a record by becoming the most successful Argentine premiere of the past two years and one of the best-performing since 1997, the year when reliable statistics began to be recorded.

The film, structured in 16 episodes in which Francella plays different characters, was accompanied by extensive media coverage and caused debates regarding its sociological interpretations and the state of the cultural industry in the country.

In this regard, its reception went beyond the artistic and became a social event that, far from fading, continues to have public impact.

The comparison with foreign productions highlights the significance of this achievement. While major Hollywood studios dominate screens and advertising, a local production managed to win over the Argentine audience's preference, consolidating its own space in the market and showing that, despite the sector's crisis, there are privately funded projects capable of remaining competitive and attracting large audiences.
