The fortune spent by Premier clubs on intermediaries and agents

The English Association announced that the teams spent more than 400 million pounds in fees

With the Premier League season approaching its conclusion and with Liverpool on the verge of becoming champions again, many fans have already started to take stock of the year. Beyond sports performance, finances also take center stage. In this context, the English Association (FA) released its usual annual report on payments made to agents and intermediaries this Monday, and the figures, once again, draw attention.

Premier League clubs disbursed a total of £409,000,000 ($540 million) in commissions, and that amount rises to £486,000,000 ($643 million) when also considering other professional divisions (Championship, League One, and League Two), women's football, and the National League (semi-professional football[fifth division and below]).

For the second consecutive year, Chelsea tops the list with £60,400,000 ($80,000,000) in payments, followed by Manchester City with £52,000,000 and Manchester United with £34,000,000. In the lower leagues, Leeds United surprises, having spent £18,000,000, above several top-tier teams. Wrexham, known for its owners linked to the film industry, allocated £800,000, and Bromley, from League Two, closed the ranking with just £27,000.

Despite the impressive level of spending, the figures seem to have reached a ceiling. Although since the 2021-2022 season (with $360 million) the amounts have continued to grow, reaching $420 million in 22/23 and $541 million in 23/24, the fact is that the expenditure of this last campaign shows a slight decrease compared to the previous one, which could indicate that a limit has been reached.
