IBM announced on Thursday a partnership with OpenAI to bring the company's artificial intelligence models and tools to a larger number of corporate clients The agreement opens a new avenue for OpenAI to reach some of the world's largest companies through IBM's global consulting business, at a time of intense competition for corporate spending on AI

The terms of the agreement were not disclosed The initiative comes less than a year after IBM signed a similar partnership with Anthropic Both companies will jointly market artificial intelligence offerings and develop specific solutions for industries such as financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail

As part of the agreement, IBM will create a dedicated OpenAI practice within IBM Consulting Additionally, it will train and certify tens of thousands of consultants, mostly through the retraining of current employees, in OpenAI technologies over the coming months, as explained by Mike Healy, managing partner of IBM Consulting

The training will focus on Codex, the API, cybersecurity, and consulting solution credentials IBM will also form a group of specialists called “Forward Deployed Experts,” trained through OpenAI's partner network

Integration of Models and Business Strategy

The company will integrate the latest models from OpenAI, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into IBM Consulting Advantage, its AI platform aimed at consultants The goal is to help clients deploy AI in their core business operations

This partnership is part of OpenAI's strategy to expand its enterprise business through consulting firms and technology partners The competition among AI model developers is increasingly shifting from building more capable models to capturing corporate clients and large-scale deployments

OpenAI had previously announced agreements with IT service firms such as Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services This line of work aims to leverage large global system integrators to bring its AI products to businesses

For IBM, the agreement with OpenAI broadens its range of partnerships with cutting-edge models while maintaining an agnostic model strategy The firm combines its own Granite model family with third-party offerings and positions itself as an integrator through the watsonx platform and its global consulting business

Context of Growth and Cybersecurity

The alliance comes at a time when IBM is looking to accelerate the growth of its artificial intelligence business, after having lowered its revenue forecast for 2026 last month following weaker-than-expected quarterly results During the last earnings call, CEO Arvind Krishna stated that AI remains a long-term growth engine and that its adoption complements, rather than replaces, the demand for the company's mainframe business

In June, IBM and OpenAI had already collaborated on the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program, focused on cybersecurity The new agreement expands that relationship by integrating OpenAI's models with IBM Autonomous Security, the company's multi-agent-based cybersecurity service

With this move, IBM reinforces its role as a bridge between OpenAI's cutting-edge technologies and the concrete needs of large organizations The combination of massive consultant training, integration into proprietary platforms, and development of sector-specific solutions aims to capture a larger share of corporate spending on artificial intelligence in an increasingly competitive market

The focus on retraining existing personnel and creating specialized experts also aims to accelerate implementation capacity, a key factor when companies seek to move from pilot tests to productive large-scale deployments
