A photograph circulated on social media has once again sparked controversy around the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. The image, published this Wednesday by user Vito Quiles, shows a man identified as Sánchez alongside a man in religious attire inside what appears to be a mosque in Marrakech, Morocco.
The post raises a particularly sensitive question: what relationship exists between Sánchez's presence in that place and his political ties with Morocco.
The image was accompanied by the message: “A photo of Pedro Sánchez appears in a mosque in Marrakech alongside an imam and possible Moroccan agent. What does the president owe to Mohamed VI?” The post quickly generated a response on social media.
A photograph that raises new questions about Sánchez
The photograph, by itself, does not allow us to establish when it was taken, who all the people in it are, or what the exact context of the meeting was. It also does not prove that the person accompanying the Spanish leader is a Moroccan agent, something that was suggested as a possibility in the original post and would require additional evidence.
However, the emergence of the image is politically striking due to the close relationship Sánchez has developed with Morocco over the past few years.
The link between the two countries gained particular relevance after the shift in Spanish policy regarding the Western Sahara conflict. In 2022, Sánchez's government publicly backed Morocco's proposal for autonomy for the territory, a decision that provoked strong criticism both within Spain and among sectors linked to the Polisario Front.
