FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the serious incidents in Avellaneda and called for severe punishment for those responsible
The violence that forced the cancellation of the match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile in Avellaneda continues to generate repercussions worldwide. This Thursday, FIFA president Gianni Infantinospoke out about what happened and called for tough sanctions.
The top official in international football "strongly condemned the shocking violence" recorded at the Libertadores de América stadium and asked the relevant authorities to impose "exemplary sanctions against the perpetrators of these terrible acts".

This isn't the first time Infantino has spoken in these terms; he had already done so after the tragedy in the Copa Libertadores match between Colo Colo and Fortaleza, where two young people died in Chile. Back then, he declared himself "shocked" by the events.
CONMEBOL also spoke out
The South American body also issued an official statement in which it condemned what happened during the match between Argentinians and Chileans.

"The Confederation expresses its repudiation and strongly condemns the acts of violence recorded inside and outside the stadium," the statement said.
They also emphasized that the institution is in contact with security authorities, is closely monitoring the situation of the injured, and will forward all information to the Disciplinary Commission.
"The Institution will act with the utmost firmness, in accordance with the regulations of the Disciplinary Commission," the entity warned.
Finally, the Confederation reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating violence in football and called on local clubs to strengthen prevention measures to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
