In an unprecedented operation, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly eliminated all senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) during a series of surgical airstrikes launched in the early hours of Friday morning.
According to Israeli sources and media reports, the air offensives succeeded in eliminating key figures, including the commander-in-chief, General Hossein Salami, and other senior officers. In addition, Israel believes that the head of the Iranian army, Mohammad Bagheri, other high-ranking army members, and senior nuclear scientists were eliminated.
Named Operation Rising Lion, the offensive involved dozens of Israeli F-35 and F-16 fighter jets that simultaneously bombed nuclear facilities, military bases, and intelligence nerve centers inside Iran.
Meanwhile, the Israeli intelligence service reportedly carried out covert operations on Iranian territory focused on disabling missile and air defense systems.
Attack on the Iranian elite
The action took emblematic figures of the Iranian military hierarchy out of combat. In addition to Salami, it is reported that four other senior IRGC command officers were killed in the bombings, including members of the General Staff and high-level nuclear scientists.
Meanwhile, the United States confirmed that it did not participate directly in the attacks, although it had aligned with Israel through diplomatic alerts, preventive personnel withdrawals, and evacuations in the Middle East.
Several countries closed their airspace as a precaution, which triggered a drop in global stock indices and a sharp increase in oil prices.
Netanyahu's political message
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly supported the action, emphasizing that it was a necessary operation to prevent a nuclear threat. In a recorded message, he reiterated that Israel is defending the "free world" from terrorism and barbarism exported from Iran, and he anticipated that this action will be remembered as a battle of light against darkness.
The impact of these attacks, focused on the near-total elimination of the Iranian military leadership, represents an unprecedented scale in the Israel-Iran conflict.
