The president Javier Milei announced this Tuesday during the Cabinet meeting that on Thursday night he will hold a national address to discuss the Malvinas issue and Argentina's claim to sovereignty over the islands.

The decision was made public after statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed his willingness to review the historical position of the United States regarding the status of the archipelago.

“He announced it,” acknowledged a member of the Cabinet who participated in the meeting led by Milei at the Casa Rosada. The President had hinted minutes before entering the meeting, in statements to El Observador, that the Malvinas issue would be one of the central topics addressed during the day.

The meeting took place in the Eva Perón Hall and was chaired by the head of state. During the meeting, Milei reviewed the results of the economic plan, the policies implemented by various ministries, and the diplomatic efforts related to the defense of Argentina's sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands.

Towards the end of the meeting, the Secretariat of Communication and Media of the Presidency reported that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pablo Quirno, presented to the Cabinet members the progress of the Foreign Ministry regarding sovereignty over the islands.

In this context, it was determined that Milei will give a national address on Thursday night in which he will provide more details on the issue.

“The Malvinas are at the center of the heart of every Argentine. It is an obligation and a responsibility for us to keep the claim for sovereignty alive,” Quirno stated during his presentation.

Milei's announcement comes after Trump referred to the United States' position regarding the sovereignty conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The U.S. president indicated that he could reconsider his stance and stated: “I always review all my positions and that is one of many.”

Pablo Quirno's Statements

The statements from the U.S. president were brought up to Quirno, who emphasized the need to advance with “more concrete diplomatic actions and better instruments” in response to what he defined as “unilateral actions by the United Kingdom regarding the exploitation of our resources.”

The chancellor also stressed that the path to resolving the dispute must be diplomatic and that Argentina must deepen its own efforts to strengthen the sovereignty claim.

“We are clear that the solution is diplomatic and that we must advance on that front as much as possible, both in different forums with the support of various countries. But just as when we made the government plan we could not depend on anyone, in this case, it is the same; we must do our homework to increase our chances of having Argentina's legitimate claim to sovereignty heard,” he explained.

In this way, Milei is preparing a national address focused on the Malvinas issue, following Trump's recent statements regarding the United States' position.
