Javier Milei's government has officially reinstated 'Children's Day'.

The national government  formalized this Thursday, through Decree No. 562/2025 published in the Official Gazette, the reinstatement of the name "Children's Day" to commemorate the traditional children's celebration, which will take place every third Sunday in August.

The decision was made following a formal request from the Argentine Chamber of the Toy Industry (CAIJ), with the aim of recovering a name that is culturally rooted in Argentine society and avoiding confusion caused by name changes imposed during previous governments.

The decree effectively repeals the change promoted in 2020 by the then Ministry of Social Development of the government of Alberto Fernández, which had renamed the date as "Children's Day".

According to explanations at that time from the National Secretariat for Children, Adolescents and Family (SENAF), the initiative sought to "position the rights-based approach with a gender and diversity perspective", in line with an ideological agenda that did not have broad social consensus. "We propose to stop saying 'Children's Day' because we want to celebrate the diversity of all childhoods", Gabriel Lerner, head of the agency, had stated at the time, justifying the change in terms of "cultural transformations".

With this new measure, the Executive puts an end to an absurd name that only divided opinions and fragmented the original meaning of the day, whose historical purpose—in force since the 1940s—has been to highlight the value of play, innocence, and childhood, without ideological interference.

In this regard, the president of CAIJ,Matías Furió, emphasized that the initiative seeks to "unify criteria regarding the name of this highly significant date, which has a strong cultural foundation in our society and a deep connection with the right to play enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child".

The Chamber also pointed out that the officialization of the term "Children's Day"  provides institutional clarity in the face of disparate criteria that were beginning to emerge among provinces, municipalities, and social entities, as a consequence of the ambiguity of the previous name. This measure,   prevents confusion and name changes that had been occurring in different provinces and local governments, providing institutional coherence and clarity for families, businesses, and organizations. 

Alongside the announcement, CAIJ launched a charitable toy donation campaign, beginning with the delivery of 300 toys to Ricardo Gutiérrez Children's Hospital, intended for pediatric patients undergoing treatment. This action will continue in other hospitals across the country, reaffirming the spirit of solidarity that gave rise to the celebration.

In line with this measure, on August 19, 2024, President Javier Milei issued an institutional message through the official social media accounts of Casa Rosada, greeting children on their day and highlighting his vision regarding the role of the State in this matter, asking that: "Children grow up far from those who promote gender ideology, undermining their integrity".

The restoration of the traditional name represents a clear stance by the Government in defense of family values, precise language, and cultural identity. Far from promoting ideological reinterpretations, the measure places the child and their right to play at the center, respecting the historical way in which this date has been experienced and celebrated by generations of Argentines.
