Julián Álvarez keeps breaking records with Atlético de Madrid
The Argentine forward keeps breaking records. How much does he have left for the next ones?
Julián Álvarez has a dream career. He won everything that can be won at the collective level (2018 Copa Libertadores[against their classic rival], First Division Tournaments and National Cups[in Argentina and England], 2022-2023 Champions League, 2023 Club World Cup, 2021 and 2024 Copa América, 2022 Finalissima and 2022 World Cup), however, on a personal level, he still has several titles left, such as the Ballon d'Or, and other personal achievements. Despite this, his personal statistics improve every time he plays and he keeps breaking records wherever he plays.
More recently, at Atlético Madrid he matched a record of none other than Lionel Messi. The forward and the Rosario star are the only two Argentinians in history to score a goal against Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabéu in a Champions League knockout stage, Messi did it in 2011 while playing for Barcelona and Julián in the last classic. Additionally, according to Transfermarkt, the Argentine number 9 scored two more goals (15) than "La Pulga" (13) in their first 26 matches in the continental tournament.
Meanwhile, according to Gastón Trucco, a journalist specialized in sports statistics, he stated that with that goal he also became the first player in history to score against Madrid in Champions play-offs with teams from different countries (2023 with Manchester City, England, and 2025 with Atlético Madrid, Spain).

This season with the Colchonero, La Araña has 22 goals across all competitions (10 in the League, 7 in the Champions, and 5 in the Copa del Rey) and is close to surpassing records of club legends. One of the oldest records belongs to Rubén Cano, who in his first season (1976-77) scored 23 goals, being the Argentine with the most goals in his first year with the Colchonero, so if Julián scores a goal in any match from now until the end of the season, at the end of May, he will equal this record, in which he has already surpassed other compatriots like Juan Esnaider (21 goals), Maxi Rodríguez (11 goals), Cholo Simeone (8 goals), and Ángel Correa (8 goals).
Other records the former River player can surpass are those of Diego Costa and Vavá, who scored 8 goals in their first Champions participation with Atleti (one more than the Cordobés), and Antoine Griezmann, who scored 25 goals in his first season with the rojiblanco team (3 more than the one born in Calchín).
