The government of José Antonio Kastdecided to withdraw a series of nefarious environmental decrees promoted by the previous administration, in a measure that marks the beginning of his administration with an emphasis on reviewing public policies before their entry into force, which aimed to prevent the country's economic and commercial growth.
The initiatives, signed between 2023 and 2026 during the term of communistGabriel Boric, included the regulation of emissions in thermoelectric power plants, the creation of new national parks and the protection of endangered species such as Darwin's frog. However, all of them were still under review by the Comptroller's Office, a stage prior to their
definitive implementation.
The Ministry of Environment explained that the decision responds to the need to ensure that these instruments comply with current technical and regulatory standards. The portfolio emphasized that this type of review is a common practice at the beginning of a new administration, allowing the measures to be adjusted to the guidelines of the incoming government
. The Kast government explained that this measure is due to the need to adapt certain projects to the corresponding legal and technical frameworks.
President Kast defended the decision, stressing that its objective is to move towards a public policy that combines economic growth, care for the environment and, especially, employment generation. “We want to generate the best possible public policy around full employment, always respecting the environment,” he said when consulted by the press
.
Along these lines, the president emphasized that his administration seeks to respond to the main citizen demands, including the creation of job opportunities and the strengthening of the economy. According to their approach, adequate environmental regulation must be compatible with productive development, avoiding unnecessary obstacles to investment
.
The withdrawal of the decrees does not yet imply their definitive elimination, but rather opens up a review process that could lead to adjusted versions or new proposals. The ruling party maintains that this instance will greatly improve the quality of policies, better balancing environmental protection with economic viability
. Boric's delusional environmental decrees included, among other issues, the regulation of thermoelectric power plants in the country.
The measure has generated a great outcry in different sectors, especially because of the potential positive impact on conservation initiatives. The government also insists that its approach aims to build a stronger environmental policy, combining updated technical criteria with a determined drive for growth and employment.
In this way, the Kast administration begins its environmental agenda with a clear signal: to prioritize a comprehensive review of inherited measures to align them with its program, betting on a model that integrates economic development and sustainability in the long term.
