Hideo Kojima, creator of Metal Gear and Death Stranding, issued a warning about his upcoming project OD for Xbox Cloud Gaming. According to the developer, there will be no "middle ground" in players' reactions.

In a recent interview, Kojima described the title as "something completely different." He stated that what matters most to him is the legacy he leaves for the future, more than its immediate reception.

A game that bets on the unprecedented

In a conversation with Ssense, the Japanese creator maintained that OD is a risky concept: "People will either like it or hate it." For Kojima, the true value of the game will be measured in 10 or 20 years.

The project, developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, will leverage the power of the cloud to deliver an immersive experience.

What is known so far about OD

  • It was unveiled with a brief teaser at The Game Awards 2023.
  • It uses Metahuman technology from Epic Games to showcase its protagonists.
  • The cast includes Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier.
  • It will feature the creative participation of director Jordan Peele.

A project in development since 2022

The collaboration between Kojima Productions and Microsoft was announced in June 2022. Since then, a video game "never seen before," designed for the cloud, was promised.

In December 2023, the teaser and Peele's participation as one of the narrators were revealed. According to Kojima, this creative challenge seeks to push the boundaries of traditional video games.
